ABSTRACT

In view of the modernization and urbanization that has occurred in Dragalevtsy, one might well predict that household size will have fallen. Traditional family ties are strong in Dragalevtsy, despite rapid changes in other aspects of life. In attempting to interpret the decline, one need only refer to the general literature on correlation between family size and various urbanization indexes. In order for a Dragalevtsy family to have access to a household plot on which to grow vegetables, fruit, or flowers, some member of the family must contribute labor to the cooperative farm. The people of Dragalevtsy are part of the Shopsko cultural and ethnic group, which characterizes much of southwestern Bulgaria and spreads over into eastern Serbia. They feel that they are a distinctive group and are so regarded by other Bulgarians from other parts of the country.
