ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the exit poll problems that have been evaluated and others in progress. VRS provided formatted crosstabs available on computer screens. The networks' analysts could create additional cross tabs, controlling on any number of variables. Exit polls have become a staple of election reporting for the news media. In 1992, these polls were used in the reporting of almost all the presidential primaries and all general election contests for President, Senator and Governor. The national survey was more complex than the state exit polls. There were different national questionnaires administered in each voting precinct. The national exit poll was used to make preliminary estimates at different times during the evening of November 3,1992. There are two other reliable surveys that estimated voters' demographic characteristics. One is the National Election Study, carried out by the University of Michigan, and the other is the Current Population Survey, conducted by the Census Bureau.
