ABSTRACT

The commander of Mayaguez, Colonel Antonio de Balboa, was among the first to dispatch a column to the troubled area. He ordered Lieutenant Jose de Arce, of the Valladolid Battalion to organize a search expedition and proceed to Pepino and Lares. Arce was instructed to take his party through Las Marias, a densely wooded area which could serve as a hideout to the fleeing rebels. According to a report of the column's commander, Colonel Martinez, he had advance information that some rebels were hiding in the area of Adjuntas. With the concentration of troops, moving in from several directions, the rebels hiding in the area of Sierra Alta had little chance to escape. In Mayaguez, a column commanded by Cayetano Iborti captured in barrio Guabas, the rebel Telesforo Anglero. In Mayaguez Colonel Gamir arrested the hacendados Enrique Brugman and Eugenio and Bruno Chabrier.
