ABSTRACT

Most United States colleges and universities, including community or junior colleges, teach a basic introductory course in western civilization. The standard western civilization textbook is a basic study and reference volume for the student and considerably aids in structuring his/her approach to the general framework of the history of western man excluding the United States. The following is a brief analysis of the treatment of the history of the Federal Republic of Germany in ten of the most widely used western civilization textbooks. In addition to some isolated references in the section on the Cold War, the Federal Republic of Germany is discussed in a compact unit covering the period from 1945 to the resignation of Brandt. The Federal Republic is seen in terms of the apprehension that the reappearance of a strong German state creates for both the Soviet Union and France.
