ABSTRACT

The Cominform parties sent operatives into Yugoslavia to gather information and foment discontent, supported opposition forces within Yugoslavia and generally did anything possible to undermine Titoist power. Coming from the former position, the fact that the Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI) approved the various Cominform Resolutions and participated in "work in the direction of Yugoslavia" is the only relevant fact. General Secretary Togliatti never wrote any attacks on Titoism for the Cominform organ. A comparison with the French Communists provides a valuable perspective on the PCI's Cominformist propaganda. Luigi Longo later underlined that Togliatti's potential as a mediator in the Tito-Stalin dispute was one of the factors that made him seem an appropriate leader for the Cominform. The nature of the encounter indicates how the Cominformists of Trieste viewed themselves and their functions. Furthermore, individuals associated with the Organization Section, including Secchia, Cicalini, Edoardo D'Onofrio and Antonio Roasio, frequently represented the PCI at Cominform meetings.
