ABSTRACT

The Red Guards from Beijing middle schools played the key role at this time. Arriving in Guangzhou on chuanlian missions, they visited many of Guangzhou's secondary schools, generally making their headquarters at those elite schools with significant numbers of children of cadre origin. In most Guangzhou schools, the extended chuanlian experiences brought a large portion of the free-floating students into the Rebel camp. The middle school students and the university students in Guangzhou had primarily been involved in separate struggles. Eastern Guangzhou was the district which contained many of Guangzhou's best schools and was the location of most of the residences for revolutionary cadres and military. Military training at other secondary schools in Guangzhou was roughly comparable, although most of the Military Training Group were less successful than those at Numbers 13 and 15 in isolating their schools from outside influences.
