ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by examining the structure of political science as a discipline. It suggests that only a radical transformation of political science will ever solve the problems observed by Susan Borque and Jean Grossholtz. The chapter presents some directions for a political science transformed by feminist sensibilities. Political scientists prefer to use the concept of "power over," though, because it is most congruent with the kinds of political behaviors and political questions conventional political scientists study. In the development of a more democratic political science, it will be crucial to understand why those who are relatively powerless decide to act politically. If feminist political science can reintroduce questions for political science, it will transform the study of politics and resuscitate political life within the context of the ultimate questions of the good of human existence. Women's studies became a field of study in American universities through political demands to make knowledge more reflective of its subjects.
