ABSTRACT

People of the older generation are experiencing difficulty with the destruction of Russia's basic moral values, the receding into the past of that which only recently was proudly called the Soviet way of life. The baby is being thrown out with the bath water: For many older Russians, the meaning of what they had lived for, experienced, worked for, is lost. The division of the Russian land once again, as in the past, into appanage principalities, and the continuing predominance of centrifugal over centripetal forces, mean that for the moment there is still no reason to travel beyond the borders of one's own region. The industrial development of Yamal is proceeding, one way or another, with unavoidable consequences: The withdrawal of more land from traditional uses and, along with that, the increased slaughter of reindeer for food as the tundra population gets younger and more children appear.
