ABSTRACT

Sex education was about moral behavior, and teachers were expected to be role models; but, in fact, teachers often needed sex education as much as their students did. Those who initiated sex education in Cuban society clearly saw it as a revolutionary project within a broader educational agenda. The Working Group for Sex Education received a great deal of support in many ways from East Germany. In the area of sex education, East Germans also had to deal with the problem of insufficiently prepared teachers. The strategy of the Ministry of Education was to teach the teachers first by introducing sex education in the pedagogical institutes. The experimental period gave Cuban educators important guidelines for teaching sex education. The approach was to work sex education into different subject areas such as urology, psychiatry, and gynecology. Cuban newspapers, especially Juventud Rebelde, disseminated information and publicity about the series of books on sex education.
