ABSTRACT

In a meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations in November 1982, the Latin-American nations introduced a resolution urging Argentina and Britain to renew negotiations to find a pacific solution to the dispute over the sovereignty of the islands. Argentina diplomatically returned to the status quo ante bellum. Even then the United States (US) vote was only a partial redress, because during the debate the US succeeded in getting all reference to the Malvinas as a colony omitted, thereby depriving Argentina of the argument that there is no room for colonies in the New World. The friendship of Argentina had been secured, for in its fight against terrorism, it had been accused by the US of widespread violations of human rights, an accusation that led to a virtual shutoff of arms to Argentina through the Humphrey-Kennedy amendment to the law permitting arms to be sold to allies of the US
