ABSTRACT

On October 10, 1986, in Reykjavik, members of the group of experts accompanying Gorbachev to the talks with Reagan, held a briefing for the press on "the new realities" in the Soviet Union. Afterwards Fedor Burlatskii, political commentator for the influential weekly Literaturnaia gazeta, agreed to an interview in English with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty correspondent Henry Hamman and two other journalists, Patrick Cockburn of the London Financial Times and Fernando Mezzetti, Moscow correspondent for the Milan newspaper Il Giornale. What follows is an edited version of the transcript of that interview.
