ABSTRACT

The United States has often been used as an example of the peaceful consequences of a democratic form of government. Public opinion research supported the notion of the peaceful inclination of the American people. The men of the heroic United States Air Force, the wild blue yonder boys of World War II who came to the rescue of an embattled civilization with crushed caps and an engaging American smile, have become part of a major nuclear strike force which terrifies the world. This chapter provides a reasonable defense against aggression without proposing to build a military force large enough to save the world. The military state must have force and discipline. The aggressive intent of an action must be concealed from the other nations of the world and from the people who help to perpetrate the aggression. The sense of psychological repression in the midst of political freedom is by no means a recent occurrence in the United States.
