ABSTRACT

Sharif Abdallah asked for the acknowledgement of complete independence for the government of Transjordan under his leadership, and for the government to be representative and to have a legislative council. Abdallah demanded a public announcement that the Balfour declaration did not apply to Transjordan, and asked for a "fundamental treaty" to be concluded between the two governments. He wanted territorial acquisitions for Transjordan, including a Mediterranean port. The British representative in Amman was to be directly accountable to HMG in London. HMG would undertake "to provide such support and assistance to the armed forces of the Transjordan Government as may from time to time be agreed by the contracting parties." A separate agreement was to deal with this subject. Abdallah again protested against the western boundary of Transjordan as lately defined by the British government and confirmed by the League of Nations Council; Clayton held out no hope that the decision might be reconsidered.
