ABSTRACT

The course uses geographical examples from all regions of the world; as such, treatment of Asia and the Pacific is necessarily limited. In this chapter, the author utilizes a case centered on the controversy between Russia and Japan over occupation of the “Northern Territories,” as Japan refers to them, and Japanese insistence that Russia return the contested islands to Japanese control. He provides a number of cases from that collection, and his own case, “The ‘Northern Territories’ Controversy: A Four-Decade Stalemate between Japan and Russia,” involves one of the countries within Asia and the Pacific area. In the case “Internationalizing the Cola Wars: The Battle for China and the Asian Markets,” attention is drawn not only to the competition between Coca-Cola and Pepsi as they vie for soft drink markets in China, but to the negative impact on local Chinese soft drink producers.
