ABSTRACT

The technology that has been imported has been developed under capital intensive conditions and such technology requires to be adapted to local conditions. Many developing economies have adopted capital intensive technologies in the early stages of development to overcome low levels of skill. India has adopted self-reliance as its objective of development, thus hoping to reduce its dependence on developed countries. India is self-reliant in the manufacture of plant and machinery needed for the production of cotton textiles, jute, sugar, chemicals, cement and a wide range of consumer goods. By adopting a policy of industrialization, India was able to achieve a rapid rate of growth and is ranked amidst the ten most industrialized countries in the world. Technology for development has essentially to meet the basic needs of that society and should generate employment. The suggestion that technology should be need-based or appropriate does not mean that it should be simple and unsophisticated.
