ABSTRACT

This chapter examines performance of Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), firstly by evaluating the data and secondly the inexplicable element and the human variable. Raymond E. Miles and Charles C. Snow classify types of organizational adaptation into four categories: Defenders, Prospectors, Analyzers and Reactors. HMT as a public enterprise was set up to achieve multiple objectives and has had to operate under varied conditions and constraints. HMT’s major contribution has been in the area of precision technology. HMT’s labour force in the machine tool units is relatively larger than comparable units in Europe and the United States. HMT has also given special consideration to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes by employing 3067 from these economically backward groups. As a public enterprise financed from public revenues, HMT has contributed to the public exchequer in the form of dividends, interest on loans, income tax, and excise duties.
