ABSTRACT

Government's helping hand in the effort to shore up the failing steel industry has served to reduce the sense of urgency heretofore experienced by both industry and the general public. A master plan—a plan of action–is urgently needed if the American steel industry is to survive under the capitalist system. While each company will need to devise and follow through its own plan, there are certain irreducible elements of such a plan that must be accepted and implemented. Government naturally has a role to play in the marketplace in order to preclude undue damage to the economy. Every single tax dollar returned by the government is fully worth two dollars in the production process. It is high time to remind ourselves that government is the servant of the people, not the other way around. The relationship between management and labor is far from ideal. Conflicting views between the steel industry and the federal government contribute to additional problems.
