ABSTRACT

The concept of appropriate technology is to be seen as part of the worldwide efforts to bring about "another development." In exploring alternative combinations of mutally reinforcing elements for development, it is necessary to provide a dynamic interpretation of the positive aspects of appropriate technology. A most interesting and encouraging, though admittedly unexpected, development is the growing support for the appropriate technology movement not only in the less developed countries but in the developed countries as well. In 1980 the United Nations will hold a special session of the General Assembly dealing with the strategy for the Third Development Decade. The confusion about the exact meaning of the term "appropriate technology" persists, in spite of a large number of meetings, conferences, and discussions on the subject. More broadly, any technology that advances development can be considered appropriate technology.
