ABSTRACT

The story of the German "Economic Miracle" is familiar and the West German economy indeed performed in an impressive manner through the 1950s and into the mid-1960s with minimal government direction. No government policies were discovered in the Federal Republic of Germany that had been designed explicitly to aid individual communities or firms in adjusting to reduced military spending. The production run of the Franco-German "Alphajet," a military trainer/ground attack aircraft, has been completed and the inventory of the multinational, multi-role combat aircraft designated "Tornado" will reach planned strength in the later 1980s. The formation of Bundesministerium fur Forschung und Technologie (BMFT) represented a new departure for German policy concerning high technology and science. Thus far the roles of the Ministry of Economics and the BMFT in conducting West German industrial and science policy have been emphasized. It is appropriate to introduce the remaining institutional participant, the government-owned Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau which provides export credits for trade with developing countries.
