ABSTRACT
The mission of the army was enlarged, and just before the National Day Mao Tse-tung went on a rapid trip to the provinces, of limited scope but spectacular impact, which lent authority to the new development. For the moment, it seemed that the Cultural Revolution was over and that the Party was about to resume its traditional role and appearance. The official propaganda organs launched new watchwords: "Combat self-interest and repudiate revisionism". All revolutionaries had to be united against Liu Shao-ch'i and his supporters and individual or clan egoism had to be eliminated, thus removing the two major obstacles preventing the systematic organization and development of the Cultural Revolution. The Cultural Revolution had stopped short in the face of the problems stirred up by its progress. During the summer, it had brought the country within an inch of civil war and had seriously affected production, as the drop in exports showed.
