ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the Pacific Community as a logical and desirable extension of the principles of cooperation and amity as are so gratifyingly demonstrated in ASEAN. The ASEAN countries are quite nationalistic and once in a while suspicious of the advanced nations. ASEAN political cooperation is a well known fact and is very successful, but it is not supposed to be emphasized and is discussed only in muted tones. In any case, political cooperation would be ruled out by ASEAN in a Pacific Community. ASEAN cooperation in social fields is sporadic-Cooperation in science and technology takes place, too, on a moderate basis, though sometimes the scientists have had trouble in picking relevant and cost-effective projects. One last feature of ASEAN economic cooperation may be mentioned and this is that ASEAN countries, being private and enterprise-oriented in outlook, have made substantial efforts to involve the private sector in economic cooperation.
