ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some issues that mainly concern military security. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was, in the first place, a sign of improving relations between the great powers. In spite of the potential negative side effects in the Nordic area, the INF Treaty on the whole improved great-power relations and the political situation in Europe in such a way that new negotiations on conventional armed forces could be initiated under favorable conditions. The neutral countries have positive experiences in the practice of area defense and the militia-oriented organization of their armed forces. In the Baltic Sea region, the central defense lines may move east as a result of the changes in Soviet strategy. In that case, the forward defense lines would not be located in the Danish Straits anymore but rather on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.
