ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book argues that the ideological biases, power relationships, and institutional arrangements that together constitute the political structure conspire to inhibit the formation of redistributive demands and to blunt the redistributive nature of those economic demands that do reach the political agenda. It explores the controversy surrounding limits to growth. The book aims to create a model for the study of political futures that would overcome the predictive emphasis of most futurology. It illustrates the approach to futures research and to convey the unavoidable uncertainty that accompanies it. The book provides an analysis of the political future ought to be closely akin to an analysis of political history. An image of the future that is devoid of politics, that fails to embrace the idea of change, has implicitly posited an end to human history.
