ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the rapid changes which took place in the volume and value of manufacturing production in Tanzania during the eleven years following Independence, 1961 to 1972. Information on manufacturing production for the period 1961 to 1964 inclusive is sparse. The chapter describes the sources and methods employed in the compilation of the first comprehensive index of manufacturing production for Tanzania. The relatively large increase in production over the period 1961 to 1965 in food processing and manufacturing industries and other consumer and industrial goods and services industries often stemmed from the establishment or development of a relatively small number of firms which usually dominated each of the industries. The establishment and growth of many of these industries followed increased "protective" measures in the manufacturing sector. Tariff protection was also provided after negotiations with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to established firms for particular products.
