ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with describing changes in real manufacturing production for the state, local, and foreign sectors for individual industries and manufacturing as a whole over the period 1965 to 1972. The index of industrial production was disaggregated for these three sectors for all industries at the two digit International Standard Industrial Classification level and for manufacturing as a whole. The effects of the activities of manufacturing parastatals on the Tanzanian economic purpose merits concern. National Development Corporation interests were confined, following the 1969 reorganisation, to manufacturing, processing and mining activities. As regards the characteristics of manufacturing parastatals initiated after the Arusha Declaration a number of studies have found them to be at odds with the wider economic and social needs of the people. The conflict of objectives for parastatals between those more linked to the macro social and economic needs of the country and those linked to the micro, profitability, needs of the organisation may not be so real.
