ABSTRACT

In particular the concentration of manufacturing industries then centred around agricultural processing activities - in agricultural regions was apparent. Tanga, Lake, Eastern and Northern regions together accounted for 75.3 per cent of manufacturing net output. Real manufacturing production increased over the period 1965 to 1972 at a faster average rate for establishments in Dar es Salaam, than for those outside of Dar es Salaam. The regional distribution of manufacturing enterprises has been identified as being relatively "lop-sided" or skewed. Yet there existed a significant base of own-account workers engaged in manufacturing activities with a regional distribution which went some way to counter-balance the uneven regional distribution of manufacturing enterprises engaging employees. The majority of own-account workers were engaged in woodworking and textile and footwear industries, generally based outside Dar es Salaam. Of all establishments promarily engaged in manufacturing activities, 20.6 per cent were located in Dar es Salaam.
