ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to summarise all of the characteristics of the development of Tanzania's manufacturing sector; nevertheless some points merit brief reiteration. As export earnings increased they were met by increases in imports of consumer and capital goods thus stultifying the development of Tanzania's consumer and capital goods industry. The 1950s saw a limited development of consumer based industries; nevertheless upon attaining Independence Tanzania's manufacturing sector was relatively small and primarily involved in the processing of agricultural produce for export and basic food manufacturing. Average wages and salaries in Tanzania's manufacturing sector generally increased over the period 1961 to 1972 at a faster rate than labour productivity resulting in an increase in unit labour costs. The manufacturing sector in Tanzania possesses considerable potential as an agent for development. It is of paramount importance to the Tanzanian people that this potential be realised.
