A number of Turkish Kurds have been forced to move to parts of western Turkey. According to Kurdish sources Emin Bozarslan published an ABC primer for Kurdish children in Turkey. The Kurds in Turkey can have rights only to the extent of beooming Turks. Although Turkey currently has a vigorous press that spans the political spectrum and the heretofore forbidden word “Kurd” can be printed, major problems concerning freedom of the press exist. Musicians too have come under fire when they touched on the sensitive Kurdish issue in Turkey. Illustrating the magnitude of the taboo on things Kurdish broached by Eren Guvener, Kosksal Toptan added: “The fact that an honorable deputy could, in the national assembly chamber, speak of the existence in Turkey of a minority nation goes beyond comprehension.” Adnan Kahveci maintained that the “one language, unified culture approach” had led to the situation where “in Turkey, there is no difference between a Turk and a Kurd.
