ABSTRACT

Yucatecan revolutionaries looked upon socialism as something more than a system and philosophy of government that gave first consideration to the laboring man. Alvarado's allusions to socialism were often in broad metaphysical terms that defied careful analysis. Socialist Carlos Loveira spoke of the Mayas "reconquering their collective honor." in dealing with urban labor as well as rural problems, he and others often made reference to socialism as the salvation from the miserable working conditions and the social degradation prevalent at the time. The Yucatecan legislature of 1921 had provided for gradual and partial compensation of both Mexican and other North American creditors of the old Requladora. Complex financial arrangements were negotiated which provided Yucatan with some loans, which in turn financed US imports of consumer goods to the Peninsula. Of course henequen, even at its depressed price, provided the security.
