ABSTRACT

From the day that some person or persons hired Nestor Arjonilla for the purpose of killing Felipe Carrillo, he was a marked man, marked for either early death or for leadership of the Revolution in Yucatan. His background prepared him for a populist leadership role in the Peninsula where Indios often referred to him affectionately as "Don Felipe." When, late in 1917, the idea of the Leagues of Resistance (Ligas de Resistencia) began to develop, Carrillo saw something into which he could throw himself wholeheartedly. In order for the vehicle to function, Carrillo knew, the illiterate laborers and Indios first would have to be taught the basics of modern organization. The general objective of the League system can be readily explained: to help laborers and small farmers help themselves through education, collective bargaining, cooperative associations, and a pooling of their political clout.
