ABSTRACT

Iran's proven reserves of natural gas, estimated at 402 tcf, rank second in the world only to those of the Soviet Union, and exceed the proven reserves of all the other Gulf countries combined. Important non-associated natural gas fields are located in Khuzestan, Qeshm Island, Kangan, Khangiran, and offshore in the Gulf. Saudi Arabia's proven reserves of natural gas have been estimated at some 75 tcf, or 7 percent of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) total. Indonesia's proven reserves of natural gas have been estimated at some 35 tcf, representing 3.4 percent of OPEC proven reserves of natural gas and about 1 percent of the world total. Indonesia joined the ranks of the world's natural gas exporters in August 1977 with its first delivery of liquefied natural gas to Japan under a 20-year, 168 bcf-a-year contract.
