ABSTRACT

The opportunities that the Afghan situation has provided Pakistan are linked with its continued search for security. Pakistan initially received a package of $3.2 billion in economic and military aid from the United States (US) to bolster its security and is seeking another large infusion of funds to do the same. The best evidence that the Pakistanis are pursuing a nuclear weapons program was provided when a Pakistani national was arrested and subsquently deported for attempting to purchase krytons in the US If the Soviets place substantial pressure on Pakistan through increasing use of cross-border raids and seek simultaneously to de-stabilize Pakistan from within, it is entirely likely that India would toughen its stance on the Afghan issue. The US continues to rely on the Sino-Soviet animosity as a means of limiting Soviet influence in Asia and also relies on China's strategic posture to tie down a segment of the Soviet armed forces.
