ABSTRACT

The Puerto Rican migration is part of that internal migration insofar as. Puerto Ricans are American citizens traveling within United States borders. The growth of the Puerto Rican; community in Boston is a good example of the effect the opportunity for employment has in creating communities of migrants. If Puerto Ricans on the island were expected to assimilate before being granted the rights of full citizenship, the thousands of Puerto Ricans who migrated to the mainland were expected to become indistinguishable from their fellow Americans. Beginning in 1950, as Puerto Ricans at home attempted to answer “the language question” once and for all by using Spanish as the teaching medium in their public schools, “the language question” angrily erupted in the public schools of New York City. Few Puerto Ricans graduate from mainland high schools; few continue their education. For the Puerto Ricans, education has failed to provide them with the opportunity to integrate into American society.
