ABSTRACT

Economic relations between Eastern Europe and the developing countries are characterized by a clear domination of pure trade transactions. To indicate the state of interests in East-South capital ventures let us recall again the results of the empirical survey among Polish companies carried out in 1986. When asked to indicate which forms of economic cooperation with the South were of special interest to them, over nineteen percent mentioned joint-ventures. Interestingly enough the same ratio for production companies was twenty-seven percent, which could mean a greater desire for organic forms of cooperation. An additional constraint is the recent action by the US government to restrict technology exports to the socialist countries by forcing several industrialized countries to sign such agreements. That could result in their increased reservation with regard to any sort of technology-based cooperation with the Council of Mutual Economic Assistance in order to avoid possible tensions with the US Government.
