ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises some of the main ideas discussed in this book, and examines the need both internationally and in New Zealand for a widespread application of programmes for the teaching of thinking, with particular attention to Reuven Feuerstein’s theory and methods. It discusses how such programmes may become an integral part of an inclusive education system, with a systematic approach to achieving the broader goals of the learning school and learning community, for twenty-first century learning. Reuven Feuerstein has always stressed the importance of a systems oriented approach to the teaching of thinking using Instrumental Enrichment. In an early paper on Instrumental Enrichment by Feuerstein and colleagues they emphasised using a systems-oriented approach in order to make enhanced modes of thinking available to the more disadvantaged in the community. There is a need for a systematic approach to the teaching of thinking internationally, and in New Zealand.
