ABSTRACT

The literature pertaining to intervention for parental alienation contains contradictory information about the need for intervention. Some authors suggest that therapeutic intervention is ineffective and recommend waiting for spontaneous reunification. Other authors maintain that therapeutic intervention is effective and necessary in order to address the negative psychological consequences for the child. This chapter reviews the therapeutic interventions available for parental alienation and the efficacy of each. The role of legal intervention also is considered. The consequences of failing to intervene are examined. Research pertaining to the process of reunification in the absence of therapeutic or legal intervention is also reviewed.
