ABSTRACT

Learning the language of the host country and its education system quickly and effectively gives refugee students considerable benefits for their future lives. At the most basic level, the problem has been how to make places for learning available to so many displaced refugee children that have fled from war-torn Syria. The immediate cause of the refugee crisis in Myanmar was the launching of a security operation by the country’s armed forces in the north of Rakhine State. It drove thousands of Rohingya children, women and men to flee over the border into Bangladesh in search of safety. The second most common category of needs among children in refugee camps, according to Sinclair, was ‘language acquisition’. The basic needs for successful adjustment remain those outlined by Sinclair, M for refugee children in emergency situations in camps. Learning the language of the host country and its education system quickly and effectively gives refugee students considerable benefits for their future lives.
