ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the education experiences, opportunities and outcomes for Syrian refugee children in Sweden. It looks at descriptions of education that have been experienced by Syrian refugee children. The country was similarly renowned for its liberal migration policy towards asylum seekers and refugees, to the extent that resettled refugees in Sweden received a permanent residence permit. Research on Syrian refugees in other countries has demonstrated the importance of how education policy for refugees must incorporate three interrelated domains – school and home/community environments in the development of quality education for learners. Insecure/precarious jobs in Sweden mean that for refugee children and young people, having suitable living conditions and foreseeable upward mobility and continued career paths cannot be predicted. Swedish Tuition for Immigrants is the most widely used programme that allows refugees and other immigrants to take language courses for free, in order to integrate more efficiently into society.
