ABSTRACT
In Chapter 9, Exploring Memory and Forgetting, we look at memory as a construction of the present, at the memory of the analyst as an interpretation of the patient’s narrative in the session, and at forgetting as the condition of possibility for memory. Memory, we argue, introduces something unprecedented into the session; the psychic text is rewritten time and again. Based on these ideas, we discuss the way memory is constructed jointly by patient/s and analyst in the session through two clinical vignettes.
