ABSTRACT

As reference systems and Shared dominant logics (SDL) are the products of pre-conscious knowledge. SDL are the foundation of a reference system running in the background that people, mostly without being aware of it, use to make sense, define success, and orient meaning in their worlds. The quantitative validation exercise is a good reminder of the need for a robust, multi-method process for studying cultural logics. One manifestation of RULES is in the company’s strong ethics, compliance, and audit practices. Another is the widespread formal delegation of authority responsibilities that spell out how much decision-making latitude front line managers can have. CERTAINTY and RULES logics are common and essential to successful successful manufacturing management. RULES was identified by the factor analysis and manifests as a respect for process and hierarchy, and a strong belief that there is a right and wrong answer to all problems. The overarching orientation is positivist: rules provide order and clarity and are enacted by authority.
