ABSTRACT

In order for a deep excavation to be carried out, a construction company needs to be engaged by contract. There are different forms of contract that could be adopted for building work. For deep excavations, especially in urban areas, the scope of contract usually includes not only excavation but also building permanent works within the excavation. In response to many claims on changed ground conditions internationally, the I.C.E. in the UK drafted a New Engineering Contract. For some work, such as traffic diversions, utility diversions may be necessary. The main work of contractor is to excavate to the required lines and levels, to provide the necessary Earth Lateral Support system as the excavation advances and to complete any permanent structures that are required within the excavation. Resident Site Staff review contractor’s programs and performance and convene regular site progress meetings with the contractor. Expert Determination is adopted when the two parties identify claims that are entirely on technical matters.
