General Motors expanded on the themes of smart roads and driverless cars in its musical short titled, ”Key to the Future.” The idea of self-driving vehicles (SDVs) resurfaced at the 1939 New York World‘s Fair in the Futurama exhibit sponsored by the General Motors Corporation. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft have already disrupted the taxi status quo, and SDV technology promises to push the boundaries even further. At the time of writing, there are a number of books that describe the impact autonomous vehicles may have in the future, but very few that provide any in-depth explanation of SDV technology. Testing SDVs on public roads typically requires special permission from local transportation authorities. The concept of SDVs stretches back a long time, first appearing in historical records around 1478. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
