ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the creative collaboration between Byron and Hunt on The Liberal, the literary miscellany they produced together in Italy in 1822 and 1823. New manuscript evidence shows that Byron and Hunt were working closely together on the miscellany, sharing drafts of poems and providing advice about the work they were producing. At the same time, the evidence suggests that the critical conversations in which they had engaged during the early years of their friendship in England informed many of the editorial and artistic decisions undertaken in the writing and assembling of The Liberal.
