ABSTRACT
This book aims at delineating the social changes in early Bengal as dynamics generated by agencies and interactions of diverse social groups in particular historical conjunctures. In this chapter, I critically review the previous works on the socio-economic change of early medieval South Asia and explain the characters of sources, mainly consisting of contemporary inscriptions, and the strategies to read them.
