ABSTRACT

In this chapter on engine mapping, various maps are described and their function in the control process is considered. A map is a collection of data that is stored in the micro-controller memory, and it contains the data that relates to certain details of vehicle management such as the ignition advance setting for given engine load and speed. In most cases such data is stored in lookup tables, where data in binary code is stored. In some applications such as heavy vehicles that may be put to a variety of uses – buses and dustcarts being examples – it may be necessary to alter the mappings when in service.
