ABSTRACT
This chapter examines two personal issues – sexuality and marriage – that have proved particularly divisive within many Christian denominations in recent years. It starts with Aquinas’s understanding of sexuality and marriage and traces its influence upon Pope Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical. It then examines a very different approach to marriage and divorce within the Eastern Orthodox Church. It concludes with a case-study of a Quaker approach to same-sex marriage and to the critique given by the veteran evangelical scholar Richard Hays.
