ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to give some useful advice on developing oral skills in a wide range of presentation settings. It considers what makes a good presentation, and how each stage of the process can be prepared for. At the pre-preparation stage students are asked to consider the audience, topic, timing and scheduling of the presentation, location, available audio visual aids and whether handouts should be provided. At the preparation stage it examines the importance of researching the topic, reviewing the information, and the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of presentation formats such as flipcharts and whiteboards, interactive whiteboards, audio/visual media, computer simulations and using PowerPoint and other technology. Following careful rehearsal, students are offered advice on giving the presentation itself, and advice is given on answering questions and group presentations.
