ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to give guidance in writing academic essays. Students are introduced to the varying concepts of what is expected and then taken through the process of writing an essay. This includes hints on how to analyse the question they are responding to including the way to understand procedure related words. Guidance is offered on obtaining and storing information needed for the essay. They are offered sample essay structures and taken through the process of writing; this includes introduction to a wide range of writing techniques and reminders to note academic conventions. Homophones and common spelling mistakes are discussed. ‘Writer’s’ block is also discussed, and some possible solutions given. The chapter concludes with hints on reading and submitting the final proof copy.
