ABSTRACT

This chapter gives comprehensive guidance on the conventions surrounding citation, quotation and referencing in academic work. The reasons for referring to and including the work of others such as diagrams, tables, charts, written arguments, theoretical positions, research, policy documents statistics as well as notes and data referred to in lectures is explained. There is also guidance on how to compile a bibliography and the advantage of using an electronic referencing manager such as Endnote. Examples given use the Harvard system, but the chapter notes that as there are others approaches, and reminds students that they should ensure that they use the system approved by their academic institution. The chapter concludes with a full description of what constitutes plagiarism and how to avoid it giving some examples.
