ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to ensure that students are confident in using technology to support their studies. It takes them through the basics of using the internet to find and retrieve information to the importance of saving and filing work and protecting it from malicious software. It identifies and explains the role of search engines and how to understand a Uniform Research Locator and judge the quality of the information retrieved. It shows how and why to use key wording and Boolean operators in their searches. The benefits and variety of ways of using a virtual learning environment (VLE) are discussed and explained, making particular reference to discussion boards, wikis, e-portfolios and podcasting. Tips for book marking and storage of information are included together with some simple rules for netiquette or appropriate conduct when using the net. The chapter concludes with an annotated list of useful websites.
